The biometric registration of voters for the 2012 general election takes off this year, following the release of GH¢50 million by the government to the Electoral Commission (EC).
The amount represents 67.5 per cent of the total budget of GH¢80 million required for the exercise.
The Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Dr Kwabena Duffuor, announced this when he presented a supplementary budget on behalf of the government to Parliament yesterday.
The minister said to advance the cause of democracy through transparent, free and fair elections, the government would support the EC to replace the voters register through a biometric registration exercise for the conduct and supervision of the 2012 elections.
